I will show you how to draw a cute troll cartoon in this advanced tutorial featuring vector designs! I admit that this cartoon character is not the most adorable one I have created so far. It's not a cute bunny, a funny clown or a complex dragon.
Still, I think you will have fun duplicating this fun monster using all your drawing abilities and a simple vector application. Are you ready to start? I know I am!
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.
On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
Yes... we need to start with the outlines of the character. You can use simple shapes like circles and triangles to form the body of your troll. Don't forget to add large eyebrows and a massive weapon! Once you are done, add plain colors on every little part of your cartoon character.
Great! Now we need to add basic shadows to our illustrations. Select each shape one-by-one and use the gradient tool to add a second color on each element. Of course, the bottom part must be darker to illustrate how the light is working on the character.
Some parts like the eyes are harder to read. That's why we need to add more elements around the eyes to enhance the readability of the illustration. Create small circles on the eyes and the pupils and color these new shapes in white. Pick the transparency tool to hide the top part of every new shape. You can also create a larger shape behind the eyes and add a darker tone of green.
Create new shapes on the weapon, below the nose, below the neck, on the pants and the feet. These new elements are added to create more depth to the illustration. Once again, play with transparency to blend these shapes with the character.
Repeat the same technique on the head, the arms and the feet. Great job! Your troll cartoon is now finished! I hope you had fun with this drawing lesson and don't hesitate to create your own character using these useful tips! :)
