In this tutorial, you will learn how to draw a skull clipart using a few shapes, simple curved lines and plain colors. Some basic textures are also added using mostly short pointed lines. Our goal in this tutorial is not to create the perfect skull, but rather working on a cute version that anyone can duplicate. There are a few simple things to be aware of, but otherwise this cartoon illustration can be achieved quickly and easily.
First, you can take a look at the short video located below to see all the steps I took to create this cute cartoon skull. If this video is not answering all the questions you might have, then simply scroll down a little bit more to enjoy the written version filled with details and tips. :)
Let's begin with the creation of a template made from long curved lines. Our goal is to work on proportions so that we can end up with a satisfying result. The top of the skull itself is made from one long curved line. Both holes for the eyes are made from long oval shapes. A smaller circle is used for the nose. Don't forget to sketch some teeth as shown in the illustration below.
Now that the template is completed, it's time to draw the cartoon skull using thick lines. Notice the shape of the nose, the eyes and the bottom part of the illustration. When you are done, you can erase all gray lines used to create the guideline. Good work! :)
This is the image once all gray lines are removed. It's a pretty basic illustration, but we can make it even more interesting by adding colors (well, mostly gray tones and black) and creating some texture on the subject.
The eyes and the nose are filled with a very dark gray color. The skull itself is filled with a very light gray color. Then, a slightly darker version is used to create shadows and textures on the skull clipart. Once you are done, you should end up with something like this ...
Below you can see all steps required to create this appealing image. Don't hesitate to draw more skulls using more creative patterns. You can use various shapes to create basic skulls or simply go for something visually more realistic. Just be creative, try new shapes, colors or textures and have fun! :)
