You found me!
The internet is filled with more than 200 million websites, but you still managed to find me!
However, you are not the only one who found me today! This website is visited by several thousand visitors each day. Enough to help me work from home for the past 10 years.
Do you want to know how I did it?
First, here are a few words about me and my past before introducing Solo Build It!, the company that helped me built this successful website ...
My name is Martin and I am the owner of How-to-draw-funny-cartoons.com. My passion is drawing and I've been doing it for almost thirty years. I have three kids, a nice home and I can say that I am very happy with my situation right now.
In April 2008, I made a decision that literally changed my life.
Let's see how it all started!
When I was seven years old, I made my first comic strip. It was a three panel story of an airplane that could not fly. One thing was missing: fuel. It was not very original, but it was my creation and I was proud of it.
This comic strip was published in the local newspaper. Can you imagine? It just felt incredible. This is how I found my passion.
It was only the beginning of a fun journey that led me to where I am today.
When I was young, computers were not able to create cool drawings like vector software can today. Therefore, I wasn't really interested in computers. I was still drawing using a good old pencil, but in the end, I was working in grocery stores or selling DVDs for a popular retailer in my hometown.
I was working 40 hours a week and I had a small income.
During these years, I was still using computers to create small games, chat and write short novels. I was happy with my life, but frankly, I was hoping for much more. Drawing was just a hobby and I couldn't imagine that one day, it would also be a full-time job.
In 1999, I went to school again and studied 3D animation. It was a revelation! I quickly learned that even if I wasn't very comfortable with computers, I was good enough to create all the things I wanted. At the end of the course, I was immediately hired to create a 3D animation.
I worked for three months and then the project was cancelled. It turned out to be my only job in 3D animation ever!
A few years later, I finally had the opportunity to create my own website. Of course, like most beginners, I went for cheap web hosting services.
After all, did I really need to pay hundreds of dollars for web hosting services while others were offering it for $3 USD a month?
It was an obvious choice!
Who wouldn't go for unlimited email accounts, unlimited hosting space, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited domain hosting? With so many "unlimited" features, I presumed that my success was also unlimited!
I spent the next five years building cool websites using all the nice tools offered by my web hosting providers (because I have tried many of them). With seven websites already online, I was ready to interact with all my new online friends!
My goal was simple: create enough websites to make a living out of this! I was on my way to success! I was still working in a grocery store, but hopefully, not for a long time!
To be successful in life, you need to work hard and be creative. However, it is not always enough. I quickly realized that even after a few years, I was still the single and most valuable visitor of all my websites. What's the point of being online if no one sees your work?
In 2007, I decided to quit. No more online businesses, no more computers.
Seriously ... How can one guy compete with the rest of the world using only his creativity and knowledge? For me, at this time of my life, only geeks or people with lots of money could make it on the internet. Certainly not a small employee like me!
To make things worse, I lost my job the same month (well, I did not really lose it. I just quit because I wasn't happy anymore doing it). At that point, I was still surfing the web hoping to find a new idea, a new concept to have success online ... anything that could help me succeed!
... But honestly, I was convinced that one day I would end up doing another boring job.
With no job and no online presence, I felt terrible. In April 2008, my life completely changed without me knowing it. After searching for an easy way to make a few extra dollars (you know, these get-rich-quick schemes that are everywhere on the net), I found something even more interesting...
What I found on the internet was a web hosting provider who offered what I was always looking for: a shot at building something that could be successful!
Needless to say that I was very skeptical. After all, many websites are promising great things that can't be delivered! I searched around, hoping that this new opportunity could become a great one.
I probably spent a few days looking for comments, testimonials and information on Solo Build It! just to make sure that this was for real! I also remembered that a year prior to this event, I landed on this website without really knowing what it was. Since it was a little bit more expensive than the competition, I simply ignored it.
I wish I could take this year back ... as well as the other five years I wasted using cheap hosting services!
Like I said previously, when I found this new web hosting company, I was not working at all. I needed to convince my girlfriend that this was a golden opportunity. She was reluctant at first, but ultimately, she said "Go for it!" and I signed in.
Solo Build It! is offering a 90 day risk-free trial, so it was something that convinced me that it was worth a shot. I could not afford to waste any more money for web hosting at that time!
I was seriously impressed with the variety of tools, the exhaustive help section and the quality of the forums.
It took me a few minutes to get used to the control panel (called Site Central), but in the end, I knew I was at the right place! Most web hosting services are usually offering cheap hosting solutions. None of them are offering a shot at success because they don't want you to succeed! Just read the fine print!
Since most of them are "shared hosting services", once your site is too successful, your account could be terminated! I know this won't be the case with Solo Build It! because they want me to succeed!
While I was working on my new site, I got hired as a tester for a small video game company. I was really excited by this new opportunity. For the first time in my life, I was doing a job a really liked and I felt like my website could lead to something rewarding.
I was only able to add a few pages at a time (I was working 40 hours a week), but it was enough to keep my website healthy. It didn't matter if I could only work a few hours on my site each week, as long as I was adding good content, search engines were pleased.
And I knew that tools from Solo Build It! were also working in the background to help my site get in a better position.
Within 8 little months, my site was already visited by 1000 visitors each day and I was earning over $600 US a month. My niche was not the most profitable one, but I knew that it was only a matter of time before I could realize my dream.
In July 2009, I said goodbye to my boss. Since then, I am working at home! No more traffic jam, no more stress! I can create my own schedule and I work when I need (or want) to!
Today, I earn more money than I ever did before. I don't earn a fortune, but it's the perfect salary to keep me happy ... and stay closer to my family. I have more time to spend with my three kids and they can even eat at home for dinner while they are at school!
My website is doing great too. In the past 12 months, How-to-draw-funny-cartoons.com was visited by 2 000 000 online visitors! Over 4 000 000 pages were viewed!
Numbers are great to get an idea if a site is successful or not, but sometimes you also need to compare your work with others to see if you really achieved your goal or not.
An estimated 200 million websites are available online. That's plausible considering the price of web hosting (you know, the cheap ones that usually doesn't get any result!) and the fact that most webmasters are owning more than one site at a time.
According to Alexa.com (a reputable website that ranks most sites in the world), How-to-draw-funny-cartoons.com is ranked below 500 000 in the world. What does it mean?
It simply means that only 0.5% of all sites available online are more visited than the site you are currently on! Knowing that a simple guy like me could beat 99.5% of all websites in the world using Solo Build It! is quite rewarding!
In fact, it's almost a secret that I want to keep to myself! ;)
Update (2018): How-to-draw-funny-cartoons has now reached 20+ million online visitors! How cool for someone who almost quit a few years ago! :)
