Learn how to create a beautiful penguin clip art using a simple step-by-step drawing lesson as well as a video version filled with useful tips and techniques. Indeed, you will learn how to illustrate this wonderful animal while creating color gradients, shadows, highlights and textures.
Penguins are extremely fun animals to draw. Sure, these characters are mostly colored in black and white, but you can use so many shapes to create a cool penguin. Before drawing this animal, let's take a moment to study our subject ...
Cool! As you can see, this great character is not too complicated to create. You can now choose to read the lesson below or used the video version. Of course, both are offering various tips that can help you reach your goal! :)
First, let's draw a simple sketch to help us draw accurate proportions. Don't forget to draw large eyes, beautiful pupils and a large body made of an oval shape (similar to the shape of an egg). Then, import this illustration to your vector application.
Use the sketch to draw the penguin clip art. Notice how all lines are made from pointed ends. Don't draw solid shapes for now! Once you are done, you can delete the illustration created in the previous step.
Solid shapes filled with colors are created separately (please see the video above for more information on this part of the tutorial).
For now, you can add a dark grey color to the body, a blue one for the pupils and some orange for the feet and beak. The patch located on the chest and in the face must be white.
It's time to create some depth and volume inside this cool character. Inside the body, filled the bottom in black and make sure the top remains brighter. The tip of the beak can also be darker, just like the top of the feet. Finally, you can also add an orange / yellow color on the bottom of the white patch.
Draw more shapes below the eyes, on the right side of the head, below and inside the beak, on the chest and above the feet. These new shapes must be partially hidden to create a subtle result. You can also learn more about this step and the next one in the video tutorial.
Using the same technique, you can now draw bright shapes to create even more depth inside this cartoon penguin. Areas like the forehead, the beak, the feet, the wings, the pupils and the chest are targeted. You can see these new elements clearly in the next step.
One extra step that you can take is adding textures inside the penguin clip art. In this example, I want to create hair on the forehead and inside the chest. The lines above must be white while the ones found below can be black. All lines are also partially hidden for a better result.
You can see below the final illustration when all effects are completed. See how the character feels real with all these nice shadows, bright reflections and cool textures? All these steps were pretty easy to achieved, but the result is very cool and appealing! :)
Like I said earlier, drawing penguins can be a fun exercise if you are willing to try various lines and shapes to create the head, the body and the eyes. It's not a huge challenge for colors (compared to a fish, for instance), but it's still a great exercise of you are not familiar with this cool creature.
