Creating one word domain names can be a good idea, but can it be done and if so, is it worth all the trouble? Let's face it: finding a short, reliable and relevant domain name for your business is a tremendous task. All words available in the dictionary are probably already used as domain names (especially if you want to use a ".com" or ".net" extension).
Many of these names are worth tons of money (like beer.com or money.com!) and purchasing an existing name can be problematic for several reasons. Let's review a few options and see whether using a single word as a domain name is still a good idea.
This is the most obvious options since the name you are looking for is probably already taken. First, this name might not be for sale. If it is, then purchasing such a rare and premium name can be quite expensive. If you can spend $10 000 or more for a single domain name, then maybe this is for you ... or not.
Indeed, before purchasing a domain name, it's a good idea to check its history. Did the previous owner used Adsense and got banned? How was it optimized for search engines? Was the name used for unlawful purposes? If the name you want to buy was penalized by search engines, then "cleaning up" this old domain name can be a very difficult task.
One word domain names are nice, but they can come with lots of problems that can have a huge impact on your online business. Of course, this is true with all old domain names, not just short ones.
You might be tempted to use a different extension to create your online business. It can be a good idea, but be aware of a few potential issues. First, an obscure extension might scare a few online visitors. It's so natural to navigate on sites ending in ".com", ".net", ".us" or ".ca" that using anything else can feel quite awkward.
The risk of using a brand name is also present. Chances are that short names like "cake", "car" or "house" won't cause any issue simply because these are every day words, but it can be problematic if you want to use a word like "apple" to name your new business.
Sadly, using a ".com" extension is still your best option if you want to create a business that reflects trust and confidence.
Another option you can use is ... being creative (very creative). indeed, you can simply use your imagination and some words related to your niche to create a new (and 100% original) name. Of course, this technique can be difficult to use for the creation of one word domain names, but don't be discouraged. There are some easy tips you can use!
First, find all the words you can think of that are related to your business. Then, play with these words. You can easily combine some of these words together, change the beginning of a word (or its ending), add new syllables ... possibilities are virtually endless.
You can also use a small portion of a word that is related to your business and combine this one with an unrelated word. This can lead to some interesting result although you are more likely to come up with longer results rather than creating one word domain names.
Of course, you can also create words that have absolutely nothing to do with your niche. In this case, you are only limited by your imagination. People might not be able to create a link between your business and your domain name, but this can be overcome if your brand is original, fun and very easy to remember.
No doubt that creating one word domain names is definitely not for everyone. Such names are extremely rare and being too original might cause a problem for some online visitors. Opting for two or three words is probably a better option and can lead to a result that is more relevant and in harmony with your new online business.
Feel free to experiment as much as needed. Try anything you can think of. Ask for feedback. Once this name is registered and your site is live, you might have to live with it for the rest of your life!
If you don't like it, then changing it might become a nightmare!
