Drawing a monster cartoon is a very creative activity! Indeed, you can draw virtually anything you want! You can draw a green character, a yellow one... you can add two eyes, three eyes, four legs... just do what you feel like and your monster will be fine! :)
For this drawing lesson, I have decided to create a cool monster with orange skin and very large teeth. My goal was to come up with a cute character loaded with colors and personality!
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.
On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
First, you need to create the outlines of your character. You can use black lines for now and keep the colors white. Once again, use your creativity to come up with something cute and original. Once you are finished, add plain colors to your monster. I have selected a few variations of orange and grey just to make sure that all shapes were easy to read. You don't need to do that.
Next, it's time to use the gradient fill tool. Your goal is to create simple shadows on all shapes of the cartoon character. To do so, make sure that all shapes are darker on the bottom and lighter on top.
Add new shapes to illustrate a few additional shadows. These shadows must be placed below the eyes, on the pupils, on the eyes, near the teeth and below the small horns. It's also a good idea to use transparency to hide the top part of these new shapes. For the horns, you must cover the bottom part.
Repeat the same process, but this time add new shapes on the fingers, the stomach and the arms. Always use a darker tone of color to create these new shadows. Transparency will hide a small portion of these new shapes anyway.
We are still trying to add more volume to our monster cartoon. This time, add new shadows on the head, the body and the mouth. These are only guidelines. Don't hesitate to create new shapes on areas not mentioned here. You might come up with new effects that are different or better than these ones. :)
Finally, you can add shadows on the horns, the arms and the feet. Good job! I think that this monster is ready to go! :)
