Let's see how drawing a marmot image using simple shapes and shadows can be done in just nine easy steps using a vector application. Of course, this lesson can also be done manually (using pencils, markers or paint), but the whole process is simply easier when done digitally. This adorable creature is quite simple to illustrate. Indeed, marmots don't have complex textures or features to draw. All you need to do is sketch a few basic shapes and draw a few curved lines to end up with a lovely animal like the one found below. Ready to learn how to draw a marmot? Cool! Let's proceed with the first step now.
First, let's add a few basic shapes that will guide us through the drawing part of this lesson. You can illustrate the head using a large circle. Ears are made from smaller circles. Then, draw the body using a large rectangle. Both arms are made from short rectangles. Now that we have a template to work with, let's begin adding a few simple lines ...
Create the head using long curved lines. More lines are needed to form the body and the arms. As you can see below, all lines that are drawn are created with pointed ends. I just feel like these lines are producing a more interesting result. Now that both the head and body are drawn, you can erase the template created in the previous step.
Using shorter lines, you can now add some hair on top of the head. More hair are added near the elbows. Small patches are also drawn inside the ears. Finally, you can complete this step by drawing short claws on the tip of both hands. Longer claws are drawn below the body to form the feet of the cartoon marmot.
Inside the head, you can draw two large eyes using perfect circles. Pupils are made from large circles too. The nose is done using a diamond-like shape. This one must be softer on top. Create a large patch around the nose and draw two large teeth made from straight lines below this patch.
Excellent! We are now done for the drawing aspect of this lesson. It's time to add colors and bring this adorable cartoon marmot to life. The body is filled with a subtle brown color. The eyes are slightly more saturated while the nose is darker. The patch around the nose must be brighter. All claws are colored in gray.
Gradient fills are perfect to create the illusion of depth quickly and easily. All you need to do is add a second color to a shape to create simple shadows. Of course, this effect can easily be done in one step if you are using a vector software. Otherwise, the result can be more challenging to achieved.
You can add gradient colors inside most shapes of the cartoon marmot. As you can see below, the body is much darker near the bottom (and therefore brighter near the top). Once all shapes are modified, you can proceed with the next step. :)
Gradient fills are cool, but they are definitely not enough if we want to create a realistic marmot image. To create more volume, it's important to sketch more shadows in specific areas. As you can see below, new shadows can be drawn around the eyes, on the teeth, around the arms and on the feet. All these new shapes must be partially transparent for a better result.
Dark shadows are great, but you can also draw brighter areas to create even more contrast within the character. These new shapes must be colored in white and are also partially transparent. You can sketch reflections inside the pupils, on top of the head, around the nose and on both arms.
I hope you had fun working with this cute marmot image. Hopefully, all these tips can also be used to create other fun animals and characters. Drawing a cartoon marmot that looks cute and adorable should not be too difficult if you are following all these steps carefully.
