This leprechaun cartoon is not only a big part of Irish folklore, it's also the main cartoon character of this new drawing tutorial! Unfortunately, don't try to find the hidden pot loaded with gold that should be visible near the end of a rainbow... this one was not on my list of subject for an online drawing lesson! :)
Now let's forget a little bit about mythology and open your vector application to start working on your character. Make sure that you are able to use all the most important tools because you will need to work hard to come up with something realistic and interesting if you are not familiar with all aspects of your software.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.
On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
Are you ready? Great! Let's start with the most important step: drawing the character. Your illustration doesn't need to be a perfect duplicate of this leprechaun. Just make sure that you have all main features available in your illustration (like the beard, the hat, the belt, etc...). Once you are finished, apply plain colors on all parts of your character.
Cool! Now it's time to use the gradient tool to create perfect shadows. Select all shapes individually (and one at a time) and use a dark and light version of the color available on each shape. Make sure that the bottom part of the shape is darker (just like a real shadow).
From now, you will need to create new shapes to represent additional shadows and textures. You can create a small shadow under the belt and you can also create four new circles to illustrate reflections on the eyes and the pupils. You can use the transparency tool to hide the top part of the circles.
Create more shapes to represent strong shadows on the beard, the arms and the shirt. Once again, use a color that is similar to the shape available below each new shape.
Finally, use the same process to create more shadows on the hat, the head, the shirt and the feet. Don't forget to use a little bit of transparency to hide the top part of the shapes. Great job! I think that your leprechaun cartoon looks terrific now! :)
