Learn how to draw vines using a few complex effects and some basic shapes. In this tutorial, I will how you how to create cartoon vines using a few curved lines and some complex effects that might be difficult to figure out if you don't have any experience with a vector application.
Don't worry! You can still create something simpler while using some of the tips available here. If you are up for the challenge, you should end up with an illustration similar to the one above. Ready? Let's begin this drawing lesson now! :)
First, use curved lines to create the vines like shown below. You can also add some leaves on the main vine. You can already add a dark green color to these lines. It can be modified later if the color is not properly adjusted.
Next, add plain colors on the vines. One of them can be lighter while the other one must be darker. The illustration already looks good, but we can make it better using even more effects! :)
Next, we need to use the gradient fill tool to add a second color to the darker vine. However, this tool can only add two colors on the vine, so we need to duplicate this one to create more effects on it.
As you can see below, the gradient tool was used on the darker vine to add an effect at the bottom. Then, I duplicated the middle part (with a pink outline) to create a second effect. Finally, the top of the vine was also duplicated (with a blue outline) to add a third mix of colors. You can also add two colors on all leaves.
Next, you can also repeat the same process on the lighter vine. This one is made of two different shapes and each one also has a duplicated part with two colors.
In this step, you can add small shapes on areas that are affected by shadows. Basically, you can add a new shape below each leaf and on areas on vines that are covered by other vines. You can see these shapes with pink outlines on the illustration below.
On each leaf, you can draw a darker shadow that must be located on the left of the leaf. The reason is simple: the light source is located on the right in this illustration.
One all dark shapes are done, it's time to give more depth to these leaves by adding a bright white shape on each of them.
That's it! This is the final version featuring vines made with colorful effects and shadows. Don't hesitate to create more complex patterns if you are up to it.
