Learning how to draw rice might be a boring thing to do (especially if you are planning on sketching just one grain of rice). That's why it can be a good idea to work on a more elaborate drawing involving a bowl and two chopsticks. Fortunately, that's exactly the goal of this fun lesson. :)
Indeed, I will show you how to create a basic bowl from basic shapes and filled with simple stripes. Then, the bowl will be filled with rice made mostly from small curved lines. Finally, two large chopsticks can be drawn using thin rectangles.
First, let's draw the silhouette of the cartoon bowl using a few curved lines. You can start with the opening that can be created using a large oval shape. On the bottom of this shape, add a long line to form the body of the object. You can see how the bowl should look like below.
Inside the opening of the bowl, draw a second oval shape to complete the top of the object. This new shape must be smaller than the original one. It's also not quite centered. As you can see below, the distance between both ovals is greater near the bottom than on top.
Once you are done with this part of the bowl, you can add another small oval shape near the bottom. Great! This lesson on how to draw rice is progressing nicely.
Inside the bowl, you can draw some rice using small curved lines. A few more curved lines are added inside the bowl. You don't need to sketch tons of rice, only a few grains will more than enough. Once you are done with the rice, draw two long chopsticks using rectangular shapes.
On the bowl, you can add two large stripes made from more curved lines. This simple pattern can help make the drawing visually more appealing. A simple stripe is also added on both chopsticks. These simple details can improve the level of realism of the illustration.
It's now time to add colors to the illustration. For the bowl, a nice blue color is used. The stripes can be slightly brighter. The top and the bottom of the object are darker. The rice is colored in beige. For the chopsticks, a bright brown color is applied. The stripe on the chopsticks can be darker.
On the left side of the cartoon bowl, you can draw a simple shadow made from a solid shape. The top and the bottom of the bowl are also covered with a basic shadow. However, these new additions are not perfectly aligned with the main shadow found in the middle.
Shadows can also be drawn on the cartoon rice. Darker areas are mostly found around the edges of the bowl. A few small shadows are also created below most grain of rice. Finally, more simple shadows are drawn on the bottom of the chopsticks.
Great! This lesson on how to draw rice is now completed. You can see the final illustration below once all effects and colors are added to the subject. Of course, you can draw more versions using various bowls, utensils, colors, patterns and effects. Possibilities are endless!
Below, you can see all steps required to draw this bowl accurately grouped into a single illustration. Don't hesitate to use this image as a reference if you need more help drawing this image.
