Learning how to draw ice cream is definitely a fun thing to do. Maybe not as fun as eating the food itself, but still quite entertaining. In this tutorial, you will learn to draw a colorful cone filled with three huge scoops. I will also show you how to sketch simple shadows and highlights to create more depth and volume.
No doubt that ice cream is one of the most popular treat there is. The sweet and refreshing taste of this particular food is always welcomed on a hot sunny day. Let's start this simple lesson now ...
First, sketch the cone using two long lines. Don't hesitate to draw a different angle if you prefer to work with a larger cone or a narrower one. I like to use lines with pointed ends to create my illustration. The result is always visually more interesting (but it's not mandatory).
On top of the cone, you can sketch three large oval shapes to illustrate the scoops of ice cream. Make sure that the shape in the middle is in front of both shapes located on both sides. Remember that this part of the drawing is representing organic food, so shapes don't need to be perfect or similar in size.
You can now use all shapes created previously to draw all three scoops of ice cream. To do so, don't hesitate to use several sort curved lines. The shape in the middle can be the most visible one.
Like I said earlier, this part of the drawing is organic so make sure this characteristic is obvious. Ice cream usually melt quickly. Don't hesitate to show it. Once you are done drawing the silhouette of the subject, you can erase all three gray shapes drawn in the previous step.
Inside the scoops of ice cream, don't hesitate to sketch small lines to put emphasis on the melting aspect of the food. A simple pattern made from long straight lines can also be drawn on the cone. Great work! We are now done learning how to draw ice cream using simple shapes and lines. It's time to play with colors.
This basic cartoon ice cream is filled with several bright colors. A simple orange color is used inside the cone itself. The lines used to form the pattern can be darker. For the ice cream, three colors are used. For this example, I have used a pink, a green and a subtle brown color.
This step is a little bit more challenging. Inside the ice cream, several new shapes filled with darker colors are added. These new elements are representing shadows. This can help create more depth and volume. It's nice to know that effective shadows can be done using only plain colors.
You can also create simple reflections on top of the ice cream using small brighter shapes. Adding contrast (shadows and highlights) can definitely help add a realistic touch to this cute illustration.
I hope you had fun learning how to draw ice cream using this simple step-by-step lesson. Below, you can see the final image once all steps are completed. Of course, you can easily sketch more amazing versions using various textures, shapes, colors and special effects.
