Learn how to draw cool things like a fun cartoon character with a ... cool attitude! Trying to figure out what is cool or not is quite subjective. We all have different opinions and it's virtually impossible to create a definition of cool things that everyone will agree with.
In this lesson, I will show you how to draw the head of a cool cartoon character. Whether you think this illustration is cool or not doesn't really matter. The goal is to sketch this character as accurately as possible. Are you ready? Let's draw! :)
First, you can draw the character using a wide variety of lines. I like to use lines with irregular width and pointed ends. As you can see below, most outlines are also already filled with colors.
Time to add some colors. However, the technique I use to do so is quite simple: The lines are drawn on top and different shapes are added on the back filled with plain colors. Having outlines that are separated from the shapes allow a better flexibility and the opportunity to play with these lines without changing the shapes.
Select the gradient fill tool from your application and add a second color on all shapes as shown below. For example, the cap can be filled with a bright green color on top and a darker one on the bottom. Nice work! :)
It's now time to draw more shapes to create darker areas. These new elements can be darker than the shapes visible below and you can also play with the opacity to create a subtle effect. Otherwise, shadows will be too dark and the result quite dramatic (which is not what we are looking for).
Just like we did in the previous step, it's now time to create more shapes to form some highlights. Draw a large rectangle with round corners on the cap, some oval shapes on the pupils and duplicate the ears. All these new shapes must be colored in white and partially invisible.
Nice work! This lesson on how to draw cool things is now completed. As you can see below, no need to draw something complex and filled with details to end up with a fun illustration. Don't hesitate to draw more cool things (and this time it's up to you to decide what is cool and what's not). Enjoy! :)
