Learning how to draw an angelfish filled with colorful patterns can be a fun challenge. This adorable fish is probably one of the most appealing and visually amazing creature on earth. In this lesson, I will show you how to create a fun version of this character using mostly basic shapes, lines and colors.
Angelfish can live up to 15 years. These wise animals are able to hide among plants using their thin body shape. They are mostly found in South America. A few species are available and some of them can live in aquariums. Now that we are more familiar with our subject, let's see how we can illustrate this one using this basic step-by-step drawing tutorial.
The first thing we can do to help us draw this character accurately is to draw a few basic shapes to form a template. This one will be used to adjust the posture and the proportions of the cartoon angelfish. You can start by drawing a large circle to represent the head and the body.
On the left side of the shape, sketch an irregular rectangle to form the mouth. Two large fins are added using pointed triangles. Another small fins is sketched on the bottom. Finally, a back fin made from another large rectangle is drawn on the right side.
Now that we have a solid template to work with, it's time to sketch the silhouette of the subject using long curved lines. You can still work on the posture and the proportions if needed.
First, draw the mouth and the body as shown in the image below. The long fins are made from perfect curved lines. The smaller fin near the bottom is narrower and pointed near the end. Complete this step with the addition of the back fin. Once you are done, you can erase the template created in the previous step. We don't need it anymore.
Now that we have created the silhouette, let's add some details inside the creature. You can start by drawing a long curved line that will be used to separate the head from the body. Next, draw a large circular eye inside the head. The pupil is also made from a perfect circle.
On the bottom of the cartoon angelfish, you can draw a smaller fin behind the one already visible. This second fin must be slightly smaller and a little bit higher than the original one. Great work! This lesson on how to draw an angelfish is progressing nicely. :)
The fun part begins and it's time to be creative! Inside the body of the character, you can sketch simple patterns using long curved lines. These stripes are pointed near the end. Three stripes are drawn on top and two more are added on the bottom. You can also draw a few simple lines inside the tail.
Let's add some vibrant colors to the character and create something visually amazing. For this tutorial, I have used a saturated yellow color for the body and the fins. Only the back fin is colored in blue. This same blue color is also added inside the head and the stripes. The pupil is filled with a darker version of this color. The fin near the bottom (and located on the other side) can be darker.
It can also be a good idea to draw simple shadows on the character to create more volume. These new elements must be slightly darker, but not too much. Our goal is to create a subtle result. You can draw shadows on all fins, below the eye and near the chin. A brighter oval shape is also added inside the pupil.
That's it for this tutorial! I hope you had fun learning how to draw an angelfish like this one using basic lines, shapes and colors. Of course, don't hesitate to use your creativity to draw additional creatures like this one using various patterns, postures and proportions. Possibilities are endless!
