Learning how to draw an alien can be a fun task to help you unleash your creativity. These fictional creatures can have multiple shapes, appearances and colors. In fact, they can be anything you want them to be! That's the fun part! Of course, over the years some stereotypes have emerged. Aliens are often depicted as being scary little green monsters (or gray, that's also quite popular). For this tutorial, you will have the opportunity to create a simple version filled with a few interesting twists.
Before proceeding with this drawing lesson, let's take a few minutes to study this fun character. As you might expect, these guidelines are only valid for this particular subject. However, these tips can be useful if you want to create more creatures using similar features.
First, this alien clip art is gifted with two antennas (1) that are created with straight lines. The tip of both antennas is red (3). The top of the head of the subject is flat (2). Eyes are large and made from perfect circles (4). Pupils are blue. This cartoonish character is gifted with a large smile (5). The body is thick and filled with a green color (6). Both feet are also thick and made from curved lines (7). Like most cartoon characters, this cartoon alien has four fingers per hand (8). Large patches are covering the body (9). Both sides of the creature are done using long curved lines (10).
You can start this tutorial by working on the silhouette of the alien clip art. The body and head are made from the same shape. This particular shape is created using a long curved line. Both feet are also made from short curved lines. Notice how the body is long and could almost fit inside a rectangle.
Next, you can draw the eyes and the pupils using perfect circles. It can be a good idea to draw a small reflection inside both pupils using small oval shapes. The mouth is large and made from perfect curved lines. Don't forget to draw huge teeth.
On both sides of the head, you can add antennas. They are drawn using broken lines and small oval shapes. Hands are created from multiple short curved lines. The character is already completed. It's time to add some details and colors.
Large patches are sketched all over the body. Once again, these new elements are made from smooth curved lines. You can draw these patches on the forehead, below the mouth, on the body and on the right foot.
This cartoon alien is filled with a saturated green color. Patches can be slightly darker. The tip of both antennas can be colored in red. Pupils are blue. The left arm is darker than the right one because a large patch is covering this one.
Nice work! Learning how to draw an alien was not that difficult. Below, you can see all steps required to illustrate this character properly grouped into a single file.
Now that we have drawn this alien clip art using a specific template, let's modify a few things and see how it goes. Like I said earlier, this subject allows you to be creative and draw anything you can think of. These are only simple examples, but you can modify all the features you want.
For this first illustration, the character is now gifted with four eyes, four antennas and four arms. I am not sure how such a creature could live or survive, but it seems plausible in an imaginary world.
Another simple thing you could do is change the color of the character. This is a very simple alteration, but it's still more than enough to create a whole new alien. This one seems angrier, more energetic and certainly more visible. All that from a simple modification.
This last example is similar to the original one, only the character is covered with more patches. This simple example shows how textures can play a huge role in the creation of a cartoon character.
I hope you had fun learning how to draw an alien mostly made from basic shapes, lines, textures and colors. Don't hesitate to experiment more using this template or while creating your own creature. This is a fun subject to work with! If you are in search of ideas, you can also try more characters from the same series here. Enjoy! :)
