Learn how to draw a present made with simple lines and shapes in this easy step-by-step drawing lesson. Drawing a gift is more than just sketching a simple box. Indeed, the box in question is probably hiding a wonderful object that means something.
In this tutorial, you will have the opportunity to illustrate a nice gift loaded with colors, simple lines and basic shapes. The real challenge will be to create a simple 3D object. The ribbon on top of the box is also a fun part of the subject to illustrate. Ready? Let's proceed with the first step now.
First, you can draw a diamond made from four long lines as shown in the image below. This shape doesn't need to be perfect. As long as opposite lines are parallel, then everything will be fine. Notice how all lines are thicker near the middle, but narrower on both ends.
Below the diamond, you can draw more long and short lines to create depth. The short lines must be vertical while the long ones are parallel to the lines found in the original shape. Once again, you can use lines that are sharp near both ends.
Now that the lid is completed, it's time to draw the box itself. Once again, all short lines must be vertical. It's also important to make sure that the lid is slightly larger than the box. A box with a smaller lid might look weird. You can see on both sides the width of both shapes.
You won't find wrapping paper for this particular gift. Instead, the box is wrapped with a simple ribbon made from long straight lines. It might be more difficult to illustrate, but this simple addition can make the gift more special.
For this step, all new lines are parallel with at least another line found inside the box. Also, notice how the ribbon is partially hiding the bottom part of the lid. Great! This lesson on how to draw a present is progressing nicely.
The ribbon must be attached on top of the box. Let's start by sketching the middle part using a few short lines. This new shape is located on the junction of both stripes. Study the location of this new shape carefully. It's important to create a nice bow using this simple ribbon.
The bow is made with two large oval shapes. Since the ribbon is bent and tied firmly, it can be a good idea to use irregular lines to draw this part of the image. As you can see below, the lines are short and not always ending near other lines.
Finally, you can complete the drawing aspect of this tutorial by adding two small rectangles below the bow. I have created simple patterns on both ends using a series of small triangles. Nice work! Now that all elements are created, all we need to do is add colors. :)
We are not done yet! It's now time to add colors inside this fun illustration. For this example, I have selected a simple beige color for the box. The ribbon is colored in red. Some areas of the object are darker to create a little bit of depth.
Great job! I hope you had fun learning how to draw a present made from simple lines, shapes and colors. All steps needed to illustrate this fun gift are grouped in the image below.
Now that we are done creating a simple cartoon gift, you are invited to draw the king of all presents ... Santa Claus! Some of these lessons are mostly made from basic shapes and colors while others are filled with complex effect. Mrs. Claus is also included! Have fun drawing. :)
