Learning how to draw a grizzly can be a fun experience if you can have access to a character that is easy to draw duplicate. It's even more interesting if the animal is standing in a frightening posture that looks scary and ... funny at the same time. Fortunately, you can have access to such a character below. Indeed, I will show you how to draw simple shapes and lines to come up with the creature seen below in just a few basic steps. Are you ready to draw? Great! Let's proceed with the first step now ...
First, let's draw a few basic shapes to form a template that can be used to illustrate our cartoon grizzly. This template is crucial since it allows us to play with the posture and proportions more easily. You can use a few squares to represent the head, body and arms of the animal. Circles are used for the ears, hands and bottom part of the body. Once you are done, you can proceed to the second step of this tutorial.
We can now use the template created earlier to start drawing the grizzly using short curved lines. You can work on the head, arms, body and legs. Ears are made from short oval shapes. Some hair is added on the elbows, knees as well as on top of the head. When you are done, you can erase the basic shapes created earlier.
The face is probably the most important part of the body that needs to be drawn. Indeed, it's the first part of the body that we look for in a cartoon character. You can draw two small eyes using curved lines and draw two pupils using tiny circles. A long eyebrow made from one line is also added. Sketch the nose using an oval shape and create the mouth and teeth using long pointed lines.
We need to add some simple details inside the cartoon grizzly to make this one visually more realistic. You can start by adding short curved lines to form claws. Then, you can draw patches inside the ears, around the mouth and on the chest of the creature. That's it for the drawing aspect of this tutorial. It's now time to add some colors to make the character more appealing.
Now that we know how to draw a grizzly, let's see what it takes to make this drawing even more beautiful. First, add a simple brown color inside the character. Patches around the ears, the mouth and on the chest must be brighter. The nose and the pupils should be darker. All claws as well as the teeth can remain white for now.
The first step we can do to increase the depth and volume of the cartoon grizzly is to add gradient colors. All we need to do is create a second color inside each shape as shown in the illustration below. See how the nose is darker on the bottom, but brighter on top.
Adding gradient colors is a simple alternative that can convert a flat 2D illustration into a more interesting picture. However, it's also a good idea to create more shadows on the character to create more depth so that the result looks more realistic. These new shadows must be darker and partially transparent.
You can apply these new shadows around the eyes, inside the hands and on the arms. More shadows are created on the legs and near the bottom of the patch found on the chest of the bear. Great! This lesson on how to draw a grizzly is not over yet (but we are almost done!).
Dark shadows are a nice and easy technique that can be used to create more volume, but when combined with reflections and highlights, the results are even better! In this step, simply draw three white shapes on the character to form highlights. All these new shapes must also be partially transparent.
Below, you can see the final illustration once all steps are completed. Notice how the character looks great and visually interesting even if only a few basic shadows and shapes were added to the original version.
Below, you can see all nine steps required to create this cartoon grizzly properly. You can also try a few variations of this animal using more tutorials from this site. You can start by working on this cute polar bear with an attitude. This simple bear filled with tips is also a good alternative. Another cute bear made from circles is also available.
