Learning how to draw a cab is more than just drawing a car colored in yellow. You also need to understand the spirit of this job to create a fun vehicle to work with. In this tutorial, I will show you a few tips to illustrate a cartoon taxi in just eight easy steps.
You will learn how to add simple stickers, draw realistic tires and create basic reflection in all visible windows. Taxis might not be as popular as they were before, so this industry clearly needs some help to survive. Let's promote this wonderful job by creating a simple cartoon cab that looks appealing and fun to watch.
You can start this lesson by working on the silhouette of the vehicle using a mix of curved lines. The body of the object is short and high. Since this is a cartoon version of a taxi, it's pretty normal if proportions are not accurate (compared to a real-life vehicle). Don't forget to create two large holes for the wheels.
Next, you can sketch two windows on top of the vehicle. Notice how the top and bottom lines are slightly curved. These lines are following the curvature of the hood located on the left in the illustration below. On top, lines of both windows are aligned with the roof. Next, you can draw two large tires using perfect circles to complete this step.
On top of the cab, you can sketch a taxi roof light using three short lines. A small spoiler is also created near the top of the rear window. Inside the wheels, you can draw two additional circles to complete this part of the subject. Finally, you can draw a bumper on both ends of the car using more curved lines. Great! This lesson on how to draw a cab is progressing well.
More details are needed inside this cab clip art. First, you can draw a light in front and near the back of the cartoon taxi. A long curved line is added above the front light. The door of the vehicle is made from more simple lines. A pattern made from tiny squares is created near the middle of the door. The handle is represented by a tiny thick line. Great work!
You can use gradients inside the vehicle if you are using a vector application to create this illustration. The cab is filled with a bright yellow color. The taxi roof light and the back light are colored in red. Both windows and the front light can be blue. Tires are filled with various gray colors, just like the bumpers. Notice how the door is slightly darker than the rest of the vehicle. This version is great, but we can make it better by adding simple reflections.
Reflections and highlights are bright areas that are added to increase the depth of the image. In most lessons from this site that are using this technique, all you need to do is add white shapes. These new additions must be partially transparent to create a realistic result. In most cases, the top of the shape will be partially visible while the bottom remains invisible.
You can draw some highlights inside all three lights, inside both wheels and on the body of the vehicle. You can see all new elements in the picture below (surrounded by a pink outline that is only added to help you located the new shapes).
More reflections can also be drawn inside both windows. Once again, these latest additions can be colored in white and must be partially transparent. This step is also necessary to increase the level of realism of this cute cartoon cab.
Once all steps are done, you should end up with something similar to the picture found below. Of course, you can always add more details and shadows to this image if you are looking for a challenge. Drawing another taxi using a different angle or perspective can also be a good exercise. Just be creative and try new things!
All steps required to learn how to draw a cab like this one are grouped in the picture located below. Take your time, study each step carefully and practice as often as needed.
