In this lesson, you will learn how to draw a broom using only simple shapes and subtle digital effects. I will show you how to create basic patterns, how to work with gradients and how to create more depth using shadows. Yes, this object is pretty easy to illustrate, but adding cool effects to make this thing even more appealing can be more challenging. Ready? Let's proceed with the first step now. :)
First, let's draw the main parts of our cartoon broom using only basic shapes. You can start with the creation of the shaft using a long rectangle made with round corners. The brush cap is done using another large rectangle. A smaller shape is added between both parts. Finally, you can draw the brush using simple curved lines.
It's time to add some colors. All elements used to form this object can be filled with brown colors except for the brush (this one can be black). Using gradients can help you create some depth and volume inside the illustration quickly and easily.
Inside the brush, you can draw a few straight lines as shown in the illustration below. These new lines are colored with a dark gray color. For this step, we just need to create a little bit of contrast. Nothing more.
Just like we did in the previous step, we need to sketch more lines inside the brush. Once again these new lines can be filled with a dark gray color. However, these new lines must be slightly brighter than the ones created earlier.
Let's complete our work inside the brush by sketching a few more lines. First, make sure these new lines are brighter than all the lines added earlier. Also, just draw a few of these lines. No need to sketch huge quantities like we did in the previous steps.
Gradients are perfect to create depth inside an illustration, but adding simple shadows can help create contrast. These new shapes must be filled with a dark brown color. To achieve a subtle effect, you can also add some transparency inside these new elements.
Simply draw shadows on the bottom of the shaft, on the brush cap and on top of the brush itself. You can see all new additions below (with a temporary blue outline).
Just like we did with shadows, you can now draw new shapes on the object to represent simple reflections. Instead of being dark, these new additions can be colored in white. Playing with the opacity of these new elements is also required.
I hope you had fun learning how to draw a broom using this advanced drawing lesson. You can now try to draw more versions of this object using different patterns, materials and colors. You can draw long brooms, short ones, plastic ones or organic versions. Possibilities are endless!
Below, you can see all eight steps needed to illustrate this fun object properly. You can also try more fun lessons created with vector applications in the intermediate section of the site or the advanced one. Have fun working with these new tutorials!
