Drawing funny cartoon faces can be a good idea if you want to sketch appealing characters filled with great personalities. Indeed, the facial expression of your character will bring out tons of emotions that cannot always be written or displayed otherwise. If you can draw a nice facial expression, then it will be easier to bond with readers.
Fortunately, a good facial expression can be achieved using mostly simple shapes and lines. All you need is to modify a few elements to end up with an interesting results. Simply play with the pupils, the eyes or even the shape of the head to create a fun result. In this series, I will show you a few simple alternatives to help you create amazing characters in minutes.
In this first set of examples, only the eyes and the pupils of the characters were altered. You can see that the first head is featuring a large left eye and rounder pupil. The right eye is definitely smaller. This simple difference can help create a comical expression.
For the second character, eyes are almost the same size. However, the pupils are literally facing opposite sides. It's something that can hardly be done in real life, but for a cartoon character it's business as usual.
In the third illustration, pupils are back near the middle of the head. The main modification is the orientation of both eyes. While the left eye is horizontal, the right one is mostly vertical.
This time, all characters are gifted with the same eyes. Only the mouth is different. In the first drawing, the mouth is created using a simple broken line. The facial expression is simpler and more subtle.
In the second image the mouth is wide open. The tongue can be seen and the character looks terrified. Finally, the third head is featuring another large mouth, but this time the teeth are visible. It's another great example that a simple modification (the teeth) can help create a different facial expression.
Yes, you can also modify the shape of the head of a cartoon character to create a fun effect. Unlike real humans, cartoon characters can be disfigured to create something intense and exaggerated. If you compare the first subject with all previous ones, the head is narrower and eyes are made from long oval shapes.
On the other hand, the head of the second male is flat and wider than all previous models. Finally, the third one is gifted with a head that contains multiple bumps. It's not visually appealing, but it's certainly quite funny to look at.
Although the previous set was filled with weird head shapes, this new series is even more extreme. If you look at the first model, the eyes are literally large than the head of the character. Obviously, it's not something that can be reproduce in real life (so please, don't try this at home!).
In the second image, one pupil is larger than the other one. The mouth is also covering the whole bottom part of the head. If you look at the third character, then things are even worse. Both eyes are not drawn using the same orientation. The left pupil is huge and both eyes are also visible outside the head.
By now, you probably understand that you can do pretty much anything you want inside a head to make this one as fun as possible. Of course, the last example found below must be used with caution. Sure, facial expression is extreme and funny, but is it relevant to the emotions you wish to portray?
It's important to define the exact emotion of the cartoon character and sketch this one accordingly. Using an extreme emotion like the one found below just for fun is not recommended. Study your character as much as possible and draw the most interesting expression using fun details, judgment and precision.
