However, this tutorial must be completed using a vector software. It will be easier to create all the gradient and transparency effects by doing so.
Don't hesitate to create your own frog if you don't feel comfortable with the design below. The goal of this tutorial is to create a nice cartoon animal filled with nice colors, subtle shadows and effective reflections.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.
On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
First, draw your character using basic shapes and black outlines. Once you are finished, fill each shape with colors. You can use flat fills for now. Notice how the mouth is separating the green color from the one on the bottom.
Next, it's time to use the gradient tool and add some nice effects on the legs of your frog cartoon. For the back legs, make sure that the bottom is darker. The parts of the front legs that are closer to the body must also be darker.
Once you are finished, select the body, the eyes and the stomach of your character and use the gradient tool again to enhance these parts. For the eyes, the center must be white while the outside part must be grey.
Work on the eyes by creating six circles. Two of these circles will be used to create shadows behind the eyes. The other four circles must be white and transparent on the bottom to form reflection on the pupils and the eyes.
Create two shapes on the head. One to illustrate a light shadow on top of the head and the other one to form a long, dark shadow behind the eyes.
Finally, duplicate the back legs and scale down these new shapes to form a light reflection. Below the mouth, create an oval shape (that should be sliced in the middle) that we will use to create a dark shadow. That's it! Your new cartoon frog is done! Enjoy this tutorial and don't hesitate to try again with new cartoon characters below!
