Drawings of scorpions are tricky to create because this ferocious character is mostly colored in black! But don't worry! It is still quite easy to end up with a cute and funny character.
All you need to do is draw your scorpion using round shapes. Instead of adding only black and dark tones of colors, I prefer to color the illustration with a dark grey tone and add lots of reflection on the character to enhance areas that are hard to read. Simple, but very effective!
First, sketch the character using a simple piece of paper and a pencil. Work on it until you are 100% satisfied. All elements can be modified later on if needed!
Once you are finished, scan your illustration and open your vector application. Add black outlines on all parts. Unlike many drawings available in this section of the site, outlines of the scorpion will remain black once the tutorial is over.
Add a plain color to the character. Like I said earlier, a darker tone of grey can be a good option. Choosing a darker color can make the illustration hard to read while a lighter tone of grey won't be realistic.
Use the gradient tool to add a basic shadow to your drawing. Each element must be modified individually if you wish to end up with a result similar to this one. All drawings of scorpions cannot be the same, but it's nice to follow a similar path if you want this tutorial to be helpful.
To have stronger shadows on your scorpion, you need to create additional shapes and color them in black.
Use the transparency tool to partially hide the top part of each shape. Make sure that your light source is relevant on all parts of the body. Now we have good-looking shadows and the character already looks more interesting.
Shadows are nice, but adding reflection on the character is also important to give more depth to the illustration. To do so, simply duplicate all shapes. Then, scale them a little bit so that they end up slightly smaller than the original ones. Finally, color these new shapes in white.
Finally, use the transparency tool again, but this time to hide the bottom part of the white shapes. Good job! You now have a nice cartoon character filled with great effects. Don't hesitate to create more drawings of scorpions to practice yourself! It's the only recipe to get even better at drawing! :)
