Using the best drawing tools is crucial if you want to create great drawings quickly and effectively. Indeed, you can use a popular software and draw amazing illustrations, but does it mean that this application is perfect for you?
Maybe you could save some time using a less-popular software? Maybe you could save money using a cheaper alternative? In this section of the site, I will review a few tools I have used over the last 10 years. Some of them might be relevant for you, others may not.
Most tools in the drawing industry are evolving very quickly so getting an accurate review is really important.
The first application I want to share with you is one that I use on a daily basis. Xara Photo & Graphic Designer is the perfect tool if you want to create great vector images in no time.
Packed with many cool features, you can virtually draw anything using a wide range of automated tools. The way transparency is handle is also quite amazing. Unlike other vector software, you can make modification easily and result are always amazing.
It's also a cheap alternative that should be considered if you are new with vector drawing. Many file formats are supported. A must.
Do you like painting? Would you like to paint using virtual brushes and paper? Corel Painter Essentials 5 is the software you need! Loaded with cool features like particle brushes, mirror painting and Auto-Painting, this is the most complete solution if you don't want to spend $399 on a single software.
Once sold $99, Corel's new addition is now available for just $49 (and much less if you watch all the promotions). This is a fun application perfect to help you unleash your creativity!
Creating a 2D animation movie is a long and complex task. You need to draw the images, animate these illustrations and edit the whole thing to end up with a satisfying result. Fortunately, you don't have to draw each frame to create a beautiful animation.
Anime Studio Pro is a powerful application fill with all the drawing tools you need to create, animate and add realistic effects like bones, particles, physics and camera movement to any 2D project of yours.
You might need a few weeks to get use to all the stuff available in this software, but once you are familiar with it, possibilities are virtually endless! :)
Drawing tools are nice, but you also need something to edit illustrations and pictures. Whether you need to crop images, play with brightness, change the contrast or simply add nice filters to your illustrations, you need a solid editing software to perform all those tasks properly.
If you are looking for an affordable software and don't want to purchase a subscription (like it's the case for Adobe Photoshop), then you should try Corel PaintShop Pro. It's a powerful option that is cheap and perfect for amateurs and professionals too.
Photoshop and PaintShop Pro are amazing applications if you need to do some photo editing, but is it possible to find a free alternative? The answer is yes! Gimp allows you to do almost everything these software can do at no cost!
Most usual tools are available and even beginners can have fun with this application. There is a learning curve, but it's definitely worth the trouble if you want to edit images quickly and effectively. Read my GIMP review here!
If purchasing an expensive program like PaintShop Pro just to use a few filters to enhance images doesn't sound like an interesting option, you can always try Camerabag. This simple software is easy to use and can create great-looking images!
You can use it on your desktop or iPhone (but the desktop version is more expensive). It's not a complex program and it will never replace Photoshop, but it's fun to play with and results are always cool and visually appealing.
Have fun with these applications! :)
