Create a nice insect in this tutorial on how to draw a dragonfly and see why this cute design is so easy to draw! Indeed, this character is not the most common lesson you can find on the internet, but it's also one of the most exciting insect to draw. Shapes are smooth and easy to sketch making this tutorial the perfect lesson if you feel intimidated by other similar characters.
If you already tried the butterfly tutorial, you might see some similarities between both cartoon characters. However, there are two major differences: 1. The wings of the dragonfly are smaller and thinner. 2. The body is longer and made from two different shapes. Of course, the dragonfly also doesn't have any patterns on the wings.
Cool! Let's start with the creation of the head using a long oval shape. It should look like an egg, but wider. The body is created from two long oval shapes. Make sure that the one on top is slightly wider.
Next, you can draw all four wings using thin rectangles with round corners. All wings must be attached to the top shape. Take a look at the illustration below if you need more help for this step.
The antennas can be drawn from straight lines. Pupils are made from large circular shapes. Notice on the illustration below how the eyes are almost touching each other.
Cool! We are almost finished! You can add a long curved line to represent the mouth. Pupils are made from circular shapes and placed near the middle of the head.
Finally, you can add a small line inside each wing like shown on the image below. I also like to draw oval shapes inside the pupils to give a touch or realism to the final cartoon character.
There it is! A cute cartoon insect drawn in just six easy step. You can add colors or simply draw another version using your own style if you want to expand your experience even more!
