This easy step-by-step lesson will help you learn how to draw a caterpillar clipart made from simple elements, lines and colors. Caterpillars are fun animal to draw, but annoying insects to deal with. They are often responsible for damaging agriculture and not loved by most farmers. However, this fun little insects are also a valuable source of silk, food and can also eat other insects that are damaging plants.
You can see below the final illustration once all four steps are completed. This version of a caterpillar is quite basic, so you should be able to complete this tutorial quite easily if you already have some very basic drawing skills. Ready? Let's start with the first step ...
Create the body and head of this caterpillar using a large rectangle sketched with a bold outline. Then, draw two small lines on top of the head to form the antennas. You can complete these antennas by adding small circular shapes on both lines.
Next, you can draw the eyes of the insect using large circles. These circles are partially hidden on both sides of the head. In the middle of these circles, draw two smaller circles to form the pupils. Finally, draw a large pointed line to represent the mouth. Nice work! Let's move on to the next step ...
The legs are drawn using small curved lines. You can draw five legs on both sides of the body. Inside the cartoon character, sketch four small lines on each side. Once you are finished you can proceed to the fourth step and add colors inside the illustration.
Select a bright green color and fill in the body and legs as shown in the illustration below. The top of the antennas are colored in red, just like the pupils. I also like to add colors on outlines instead of using only a black color. Green shapes have green outlines while red shapes have ... red outlines!
You can see all four steps needed to create this character in the illustration below. You can use this tutorial as a template and modify the cartoon character and create your own version. Instead of using straight lines and rectangles, why not try round shapes and curved lines. Enjoy! :)
