Learn to draw a cartoon toucan in this easy step-by-step tutorial. To do this, you will use three of the easiest shapes to sketch: squares, rectangles and triangles. In just six easy steps, you should be able to reproduce this animal easily and rapidly if you don't mine practicing a little.
Each animal is unique and it is slightly more difficult to capture the physical uniqueness of a character when this one is drawn with few details and simple and basic shapes. Let's see how we can draw this bird by assembling a few simple shapes quickly and easily.
First, you can start by sketching the body of the animal using a simple rectangle (that almost looks like a square). Make sure to leave some space all around this shape so that we can draw the remaining body parts. Once you are done with this simple shape, just proceed with the next step.
Next, draw two more shapes above the body to illustrate the head of the cartoon toucan. The first shape (the one directly above the body) is used to form the head itself. The second shape (on the left ... the thinner one) is needed to represent the base of the beak. Draw this pattern as shown below.
On the left side of the illustration, you can sketch the tip of the beak using a pointed triangle. It's true that the beak of a toucan can be huge, but try adding a modest shape for this step. Next, add another small rectangle inside the body to create the visible wing (since the other one is located behind the character).
Under the body of the cartoon animal, you can sketch a simple tail using a long and thin rectangle. You can see the new addition below (on the right side of the image). This new shape is basically the same width as the wing created earlier.
On the left side of the tail (and still under the body), draw two long legs made from very thin rectangles. For the feet, you can use small oval shapes. Notice how the legs are slightly longer than the tail.
Inside the rectangle used to form the head of the toucan, you can draw the pupils using small dots. These new additions are located on the left side of the picture. On the right side of the head, sketch a few hairs using three short lines. Nice work! This tutorial is almost over!
Now that the character is completely drawn, you can use gradients to add colors inside the illustration. The beak and the legs are orange, the head is white and the rest of the body is black. For the wing, you can use a light gray color. Also, notice how gradients are adding some depth to the character. Indeed, most shapes are now darker near the bottom and brighter on top.
Now that we are done working with this fun toucan, don't hesitate to draw more cartoon birds from this site below. It's important to practice often if you want to improve your drawing abilities quickly and effectively. Once you are more comfortable sketching these fun animals, creating your own birds will become a fun and easy task. :)
