In this drawing lesson, I will show you how to draw a nice cartoon sunrise. It might not be as beautiful as the real thing, but creating a simple sunrise with nice lighting effect can be done easily with a vector software.
For this tutorial, being able to play with the gradient tool and the transparency tool is more important than knowing how to draw a basic shape.
First, just draw a simple landscape including mountains, an orange sky, a dark ocean and a round sun. Notice that the sun is made of two circles: A yellow one on the outside and a white one on the inside.
In this step, I added a gradient effect on the sky (the center is lighter). I have also created two clouds behind the sun. One is orange while the other is almost white.
Now, to make the drawing more interesting, I have used the transparency tool on both clouds and on the sun.
To create a sky that is visually attracting, you need to add more clouds. Notice how I have used a darker and lighter tone to create contrast.
Next, use the transparency tool on your clouds.
In this step, the modifications are subtle. Around the sun, I have drawn a light yellow shape to simulate sunlight. On top of the mountains, I have placed a small and white reflection.
Now it's time to work on the ocean! Duplicate your mountains to form the reflection on the water. For the sun, create a new irregular shape to simulate waves.
Finally, use the transparency tool on both the mountain's reflection and the irregular shape of your sun on the water. Also, notice how I have added a little touch of orange in the water to complete the effect. Congratulations! You have created a nice cartoon sunrise using only a few shapes and a good vector software!
