Drawing cartoon squirrels can be done using various shapes and techniques. You can use basic shapes like circles and curved lines to draw an adorable version of this animal. Using plain colors to end up with a cuter image is also a nice alternative. But if you want to try something different, then you can try a more original approach.
For this basic tutorial, I will show you how to create a cute squirrel made from squares and rectangles. Instead of using plain colors, you will also have the opportunity to play with gradients to create more depth and volume. Ready? Let's see how we can draw this image in just a few simple steps now ...
First, you can sketch the body of the squirrel using a large vertical rectangle. You will need to draw this new shape large enough to contain more body parts later in this tutorial. Next, sketch a basic tail using another thin rectangle on the right of the original shape. This new element must be narrower and shorter.
Once you are done sketching the silhouette of the subject, you can add some teeth using small squares. Both teeth are located near the middle of the body. Next, draw a large square patch on the chest of the animal. This new shape is almost located on the bottom of the character.
Above the teeth, you can draw a small nose using a square. It's true that a nose is usually made from a circular shape, but we need to keep this part of the drawing relevant with the character by using a small square.
On the bottom part of the character, you can draw four legs (and feet) using more squares and rectangles. The back feet are located on the side of the subject while the front ones are drawn just below the patch.
Only the eyes are made from circular shapes. Indeed, using squares or rectangles to create the eyes can be ... scary. All cartoon squirrels have small ears, so remember to draw those using tiny rectangles as shown in the illustration below.
One last thing we can do inside this cartoon animal is to add some straight lines inside all four legs. Make sure that the tip of the lines is sharp and pointed. Excellent work! We are done learning to draw cartoon squirrels.
Now that the animal is completed, you can add gradients to create some depth and volume. Notice in the illustration below how all shapes are now darker near the bottom and brighter on top. This squirrel is mostly filled with gray colors. Only the nose is pink. The teeth and the patch are colored in white.
