How to draw a cartoon ghoul

In this lesson, I will show you how to draw a cartoon ghoul that looks appealing and fun using complex digital effects. You will learn how to illustrate this intriguing character by adding simple shadows, basic highlights and gradient colors. Just like any monsters, drawing ghouls is a fun experience since you can unleash your creativity and draw virtually anything you want (four arms, various colors, different textures, etc ...). Let's see how we can draw the character found below in just eight fun steps.

Working on the silhouette of the monster

First, let's draw the silhouette of the creature using mostly long curved lines. You can start by working on top of the head and draw two pointed ears. Arms are long and made from shaky lines. Both feet are large and gifted with long nails. The body of the ghoul is short and large. Nice work!

Drawing a creepy face

Inside the head, you can draw two large eyes using perfect oval shapes. Eyebrows are covering the top of both eyes. Pupils are made from thin oval shapes. The nose is created using short curved lines. Finally, you can draw a really large mouth and sketch several small teeth inside this one.

Adding small, but important details

On top of the head, you can sketch short triangles to create horns. Large patches are also added inside both ears. Below the eyes, add small lines. Large veins can also be drawn inside both eyes. Another small curved line is drawn below the mouth.

time to add some colors

Inside the cartoon ghoul, you can add gradient colors to create some depth. As you can see below, the bottom of the body is slightly darker than the top. Repeat the same techniques for all shapes found in this illustration.

drawing shadows to create volume

Although our goal is not to create a realistic illustration, adding shadows can be a good idea to create more volume inside our character. All these new shapes can be dark and partially transparent. You can draw shadows on the horns, inside the ears, around the eyes and inside the eyes.

More shadows are drawn below the nose, on the arms, the teeth, the nails and the feet. It's important to keep a nice balance and create just enough shadows to make the drawing visually more appealing.

More shadows to give more depth to the character

Unlike the previous shadows that were added in dark areas, these new shadows are placed on the arms, the legs and the body of the cartoon ghoul. This is a good alternative from drawing complex textures. Once again, make sure that all new shapes are partially transparent.

creating beautiful highlights

Dark shapes are nice, but adding brighter ones can also be a good idea. In this case, all new shapes are colored in white and added mostly on top of the head. Of course, make sure that these new shapes are also partially transparent.

a great cartoon ghoul is waiting for you!

Nice work! Once all steps are completed, you should end up with something like this. Like I said earlier, the fun thing with monsters is that you can create whatever you want ... so you can't be wrong. Your monster doesn't have to be 100% similar to this one. It can differ as much as you want! :)
