Drawing a cartoon firetruck can easily be done using a few basic shapes. Of course, this vehicle remains a complex subject to illustrate properly. That's why it's important to follow all steps carefully if you want to achieve your goal. In this lesson, I will show you how to draw the model found below. You will also learn how to add simple reflections and shadows on the vehicle.
Ready? Let's start with the first step now ...
We can start this tutorial by drawing the silhouette of the firetruck using rectangles with round corners. The vehicle is made of three different sections. The middle one is shorter and the front one (on the right) is slightly irregular. You can also sketch the wheels using two perfect circular shapes. Notice the length of the subject.
Once you are done drawing these three main shapes, you can add windows in the front of the vehicle. Four additional rectangles are required for this step. Next, sketch two bumpers using more rectangles made from round corners. Finally, another thin shape is added behind the firetruck.
On top of the vehicle, you can draw a simple light using two small rectangles. A front light is also added below the main window. More details are sketched inside the wheels. This cartoon firetruck is slowly being built from scratch! Nice work!
In the middle section of our illustration, we can add more details using a mix of straight lines and small circles. This part of the vehicle is often loaded with tools as well as an access to the main engines. For this lesson, let's try to keep this step as simple as possible.
The firetruck is now almost completed. All we need to do is sketch a few details and patterns. In this step, you can draw long stripes on the side of the vehicles as shown in the image below. Stripes on the bottom part of the vehicle are thicker while the ones located in the middle are thinner. The area located around the windows is also included inside a large brighter stripe.
One last step before proceeding with colors and special effects! First, you can draw more curved lines around the windows to create basic frames.
Curved lines are also sketched above both wheels. Finally, a few vertical patterns are drawn on the body of the firetruck.
Firetrucks are often depicted with red and light gray colors. This one is no different. All stripes are gray while the vehicle is colored in red. The wheels are darker and the middle part is black. Windows are blue and the frames are gray. The light on top of the vehicle can also be red.
If you want to go one step further, then you can add more digital effects to this image. In this step, gradients were used to create more depth and volume. As you can see below, all parts are now darker near the bottom and brighter on top. This version is great, but we can definitely do better.
Inside the windows and the red light, draw large white shapes. Next, add transparency to these new elements so that we can end up with subtle reflections. You can compare the windows from the image below with the previous one to see the difference.
Repeat the same process, but this time draw new white shapes on the vehicle itself. Subtle reflections are also added on top of both wheels.
I hope you had fun learning to draw this adorable cartoon firetruck. If you need more help illustrating this fun vehicle, then you can look at the picture below. This one contains all the steps needed to achieve your goal. It's a complex subject to draw, but you can do it if you practice enough and follow all these steps carefully.
Now that we are done with this lesson, you are invited to learn to draw more vehicles from this site below. All these tutorials are filled with various challenges that can help you become better at drawing. Remember to practice often and have fun creating! :)
