Learn how to create a cartoon dove using complex effects and simple shapes. This cute cartoon animal is quite appreciated. Often associated with magic and marriage, this white bird seems fragile and gracious. In this drawing tutorial, I will help you draw a simple dove made from a few lines and several complex lighting effects. Are you up to the challenge? Let's give it a try! :)
Start by drawing the character using only basic shapes made from straight and curved lines. The selected posture is quite interesting and slightly more challenging. Don't hesitate to look for a model if needed. Once you are done, let's proceed to the next step!
Make sure that all outlines are gone and add colors on all shapes. The beak and the feet are filled with an orange color while the eyes and the pupils are yellow, orange and black. The rest of the dove is colored with various tones of grey.
Select the gradient tool from your vector application and add a darker color to all shapes. Basically, you need two different version of the same color on each shape: a brighter one and a darker one.
Draw new shapes below every single feather from both wings. These new shapes are filled with a darker grey color and are slightly transparent on the bottom. Around the eyes, draw a small grey shape that is also transparent on the bottom. Finally, add some shadows on the left of the beak and on the bottom of this one.
Let's take a short break to look at the result so far. All parts of the dove are easy to read, but we can certainly do better than this! :)
On top of each feather that can be seen on the wings and on the tail, draw a long shape colored in white. Once again, make sure that every single shape is invisible on the bottom.
Duplicate the body of the character and change the color to white. Then, use transparency to hide the left part of the new shape. On the pupil, draw an oval shape colored in white and make this new shape slightly transparent. Repeat the same technique on the beak and the legs of the cartoon animal.
Nice work! This cartoon dove is now ready to fly! Of course, you can try many different versions using bold outlines or brighter colors. Just remember to practice as often as needed! That's the key to succeed!
