This simple tutorial will help you learn to draw a cartoon donkey. Yes, donkeys are parts of the horse family. But they are often portrayed as being slow and stupid! Whether it's true or not doesn't really matter.
This animal is cute and very loved by children. After all, kids probably see donkeys as being small horses that can easily fit their needs! So let's try to draw a donkey using simple, basic shapes!
First, draw the nose of your animal by sketching a simple square. Once you are done, add a rectangle on top of it. Notice that the bottom of this new shape should be larger than the top.
Then, add a few shapes to create the head. The eyes are sketched with two plain circles. You can make them overlap a little. Continue your artwork by drawing a square on top of your donkey's head. It will be used to sketch the piece of hair that we usually see on top of their heads. Finally, draw two triangles to form the ears.
The body of your character has to be small, but strong. Just sketch a square about the same size as the head. Next, draw a line to illustrate the tail and a rectangle near the end of your line to form the tip of the tail.
Each leg of your donkey should be large but small. We are not drawing a horse after all! So just do so by adding two rectangles. One for leg itself and another one (smaller) to represent the foot.
Ok! Let's make a nice donkey out of those shapes! Work on the nose and add two small circles on each side to create some room for the nastral. You can also join the two eyes together to give a funnier look to your character.
Finish your tuning on the head by adding the nastral, the pupils and the piece of hair on top of the head. You can also refine the ears of the donkey by drawing them rounder on the bottom and sharper on top!
If you don't have too much trouble drawing the body of a horse, then you shouldn't be too worried with this particular step. Just make sure the outline is accurate and that your donkey will indeed look small and strong.
So there you have it! A nice and easy lesson on drawing a cartoon donkey. If you followed all steps carefully, the result should be similar to the one above. But please realize that more practice can be necessary to create animals that are accurate and amusing! I hope you had a blast following this lesson and have fun!
