Learning to draw a cartoon comedian can be done in many ways. For this lesson, Let's assume our character is dressed like a clown. By doing so, this tutorial will be more interesting than just creating a simple cartoon man. Clowns can be funny, scary or creepy. Since we are not in a horror movie, drawing a cute clown wearing a colorful suit is more appropriated. The fun thing about clowns is the liberty you can have with this subject. These fun characters can wear various clothing, display strange makeup or use fun accessories.
Before proceeding with this lesson, it can be a good idea to take a closer look at this comedian. Of course since all clowns can be different, these guidelines can only be applied to this version of the character.
Our subject is wearing a blue hat (1) filled with a thin green stripe (2). A large red nose (3) can be seen in the middle of the face. The clown is wearing a simple blue shirt (4) covered with yellow suspenders (5). Near the wrists, a green pattern is visible (6). Pants are yellow (7) and larger near the top. Shoes are long and colored in red (8). Large red stripes (9) are also added on the pants. A few colorful buttons are added inside the shirt (10). A cute collar colored in green is also applied near the neck (11). White makeup is added around the mouth (12). Hair of the character is colored in orange (13).
First, you can draw a few basic shapes to create a template that we can work with. This will give us the opportunity to work on the posture and the proportions. Start by sketching a large rectangle to form the head. The body can be made using a similar shape. The neck is done using a smaller square. Complete this step by adding the arms and the legs using more thin rectangles.
Now that we have a few basic shapes to work with, you can start sketching the cartoon comedian using long curved lines. Notice how the head is made from a rectangle with round corners. The body is also done using a similar line. Make sure that the top of the pants are larger than the shirt. Once this first step is completed, you can erase all basic shapes drawn in the previous step.
It's time to create the facial features using more basic shapes. Eyes are done using medium circles. Pupils are made from simple dots. You can draw eyebrows and the mouth using short curved lines. Finally, draw two small ears using more short lines. Great work! This lesson on how to draw a clown (or a comedian!) is progressing nicely.
On top of the head, draw a large hat made with a round top. Don't forget to create a small stripe inside the object. Below the hat, sketch some hair using more short curved lines. The nose is represented by a large circle. A simple patch made from an oval shape is added around the mouth of the cartoon clown.
One last step before adding some colors inside the character! On the shirt, you can draw suspenders using thin rectangles. Three circles are added to form the buttons. Patterns near the wrists are also created. Two large stripes made from thin lines are drawn inside the pants. Complete this step with the addition of short lines inside the shoes.
It's time to add colors inside the cartoon comedian. Both the hat and the shirt can be blue. A bright yellow color can be added inside the pants and the suspenders. The nose, the shoes and the stripes found inside the pants can be red. Accessories are filled with a bright green color.
Nice work! This lesson on how to draw a comedian is now completed. You can see all steps required to create this character below. We are not done yet ...
Like I said previously, clowns are fun character to illustrate because they can wear various accessories, clothing and makeup. For this second part of the tutorial, let's see how we could improve the character by modifying only one aspect: colors.
Our first attempt is quite original. For this version, the clown clip art is filled with various colors that don't necessarily create a relevant pattern. In fact, anything goes. The mix is pretty messy and even hair is not the same color on both sides. This is quite creative, but the clown is much harder to read.
Next, let's try a version where only three colors are used to illustrate the character. Indeed, the suit is only filled with some green, blue and yellow colors. Only the hair and the nose are filled with different colors. This is pretty basic, but visually more interesting than the previous clown.
Let's continue our path towards simplicity with this second example. This time, only two colors are used for the costume (blue and yellow). It's definitely easier to read too, but something is missing.
Why not try a more extreme version of this cartoon comedian ... a suit filled with just one color: blue. Sure, some parts are white, but overall only blue color are used inside the suits. This version is definitely easier to read than the previous character. It's not perfect, but it's a great alternative.
This black and white character is also very charming. This is perfect if you want to create a retro image. Somehow I feel like we are in the 20s all over again. Even the nose and the hair are not as bright as they were in the previous samples. Yep, I really like this version.
This last example is mostly filled with brown colors. Once again, all colors are not as bright as they were in the previous illustrations. The hair and the suit are now filled with the same color. The nose and the buttons are also similar. I also love this character. Finding the perfect color scheme can be a long task sometimes.
I hope you had fun learning to draw this cool cartoon comedian. Don't hesitate to draw more versions using various patterns, colors and accessories. Now that this lesson is over, feel free to try more characters from the same series here. Enjoy! :)
