Draw a nice cartoon baby made with a large oval head and cute little shapes. In this lesson, I will show you how to use a vector application to create a fun and colorful baby made from simple elements and shapes. This tutorial is dedicated to people who are already familiar with the use of a vector software. :)
Ready? Great! Let's begin with the creation of the head using a very large oval shape. The pupils are also made from large circles. The body is done using a small rectangle while the ears and feet are done from small circles. Notice how the head is huge compared to the rest of the body.
Next, add a single hair on top of the head. Inside the eyes, draw large pupils using circles. Eyebrows are made from simple lines. The mouth and the nose are done using thin pointed lines as shown below.
It's now time to add plain colors inside the character. The pupils are filled with a dark blue color. The eyes are white and the diaper is grey. The rest of the character is filled with a bright skin color.
Using the gradient fill tool, you can add a second color to all shapes to create a darker area on the bottom of these shapes. For examples, the ears can be brighter on top and darker on the bottom.
Continue adding depth and volume to this illustration by drawing additional shapes to form shadows. These new shadows must be subtle and slightly transparent. You can add them on the ears, below the nose and the head, on the feet, on the diaper and on the hands.
Adding shadows is a great technique to create volume, but adding highlights is also great if your goal is to end up with something even more fascinating. Sketch a few white shapes on the pupils, the ears, the head and the feet. All these new shapes must be transparent and almost invisible on the bottom.
Nice work! The result is a fun cartoon baby filled with complex effects that are used to give life to this cartoon character. It's now time to draw your own babies using similar shapes and techniques. Have fun and don't forget to practice as often as needed!
