Learning how to draw toes can be useful if you are planning to sketch feet. Toes are not that difficult to illustrate, but you will need to be aware of a few simple tips to achieve your goal properly. In this lesson, I will show you how to create beautiful toes in just ten steps.
Your biggest challenge will be to create accurate proportions. The silhouette of the foot and the toes can also be a huge obstacle for beginners. Just take your time, study this part of the body carefully and have fun drawing. :)
First, it can be a good idea to sketch a few basic shape to help you create a simple template. This one will be used to draw the foot in the next step. Notice how the toes are located in the picture below. It's also the time to polish the posture and the proportions of our subject.
Using long curved lines, sketch the silhouette of the foot as shown below. Both sides are unique so make sure to illustrate those parts properly. The big toe is much larger and longer than the others. The little toe is also slightly curved towards the inside of the foot.
Inside all toes, you can sketch nails using more simple curved lines. The nail added on the little toe is slightly different from the others. The top part of all nails is almost straight while the bottom part is round and shapes like the tip of the toes.
Toes are made from several small bones and can bend a little bit when needed. To illustrate this fact, we need to add small lines on the toes as shown below. Great work! This lesson on how to draw toes is progressing nicely.
We can now bring this illustration to life with the addition of plain colors. For this example, a subtle color was used on the skin. For the nails, a brighter version of the previous color was used.
Now that these toes are drawn and filled with colors, let's add a few darker shapes to form basic shadows. The first shadows that we can add are located between the toes. These new elements are darker and also made from basic shapes.
The next elements we need to add are crucial to create a realistic version of this part of the body. Indeed, I will show you that drawing a simple shape on each toe can help create an amazing foot quickly and easily.
For each toe, make sure that the top part is brighter and round. Each shadow is drawn on both sides of the toes. You can see these new additions below (surrounded by a temporary pink outline).
A large shadows can be drawn on the foot using a single dark shape. For this example, three smaller circles were also added on a few toes to create more depth and volume.
We also need to draw the white shape that can be seen on most nails (it's called a lunula). To do so, draw a simple curved line to create a new solid shape. This one can be colored in white.
I hope you had fun learning how to draw toes using this simple step-by-step lesson. This part of the body is not easy to illustrate, so don't hesitate to practice as often as possible. It's the only way to get better at drawing.
