Outlines in vector based software
Using a vector based software, you can create some pretty amazing outlines for your characters! Unlike drawing with a pencil, a wide variety of special effects can be added to an outline to make it look more sharp and accurate!
You can apply changes on the size, the shape and the color of your outline in a couple of seconds only! It can dramatically change the look of your character!
Here are some basic examples of things that you can do (and things you shouldn't try!) to create the perfect outline!
Note: This tutorial was made using Xara Xtreme. Some effects might not be available in your software.
In this image, all four characters are similar except for the width of the outline. Image number three doesn't look so good as the outline seems too big for the picture itself!
As for image number four, removing the outline can be a good idea, but details inside the drawing are missing. Also, without the square on the background that is grey, the eyes of the character wouldn't be visible!
Vector software are sometimes able to create lines with various sizes. In these cases, the drawings are made with lines that are small on one end and larger on the other end.
Number three is probably the one having the most terrible result while number four turns out to be OK!
Some effects are more amusing than practical! This is the case for some outline effects that don't necessarily fit well on a character. Number two here might be the exception!
Here, you have the original drawing on the left and another one made with irregular lines on the right. Both are effective and very interesting, it's just a matter of choosing the type of drawing you like the most! Don't forget to practice a lot with your vector based software and have fun!
