Whether it's Thanksgiving or not, it's always fun to learn how to draw a beautiful turkey drawing! This nice cartoon animal is quite easy to recognize with its large tail, round head, large eyes and pointed beak.
Your goal is to duplicate this cartoon character and try to come up with a nice 2D character that feels like it might have been made with a 3D software. Of course, owning a vector application for this drawing lesson is almost a crucial requirement.
First you need to sketch the turkey using a pencil and a piece of paper. Don't hesitate to try over and over again until you are 100% satisfied with the result. It's not important if the character is not a perfect duplicate of the template above. As long as it's similar, you can move on to the next step.
Open your vector software and import the illustration. Create a new layer and add black outlines as shown above.
Next, create another layer and draw plain shapes filled with the appropriated colors. You will understand later in this tutorial why the plain shapes and the outlines are not on the same layer.
Select your gradient tool and add a second color on the plain shapes created in the previous step. By doing so, you will create a simple shadow that already gives more depth to your illustration.
Once again, create a new layer between the outlines and the plain shapes. On this new layer, draw darker shapes that will represent stronger shadows.
These new shapes are great, but slightly too dark. Select the transparency tool and partially hide the top section of each shape. Shadows are now softer and more realistic.
To create even more volume on the turkey drawing, you can also add reflection. To achieve this simple effect, duplicate most important shapes from the cartoon character and scale these new shapes a little bit so that they don't touch the outlines. You can also color all new elements in white.
Of course, you will need to use the transparency tool again to make this effect more believable. This time, try to keep the top part of each shape a little bit more visible (as for the bottom of the shapes, they can be completely hidden.
Finally, change the color of the outlines using a soft brown tone. For the beak and the feet, a dark orange will be perfect. Great job! Your cartoon character is now finished. I hope you had fun drawing this cartoon character! Have fun! :)
