Learn how to draw a simple mouse cartoon filled with simple colors, nice shadows and subtle reflections. This fun cartoon animal is very easy to draw and recognize. With its large ears, white fur, long thinny tail and small legs, it is hard not to enjoy the presence of this cute cartoon character.
This tutorial is rather easy and fun to achieved. You don't need to copy all shapes from the template character available below. If you prefer, you can always use your own character and try to apply colors and shadows using the guidelines of this drawing lesson.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline. On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
First, create the outlines of your cartoon character using only thin black lines. Once you are done, use some basic (and plain) colors to enhance your illustration. It doesn't really matter if you character looks a little bit strange for now.
Once you are ready, select the gradient tool in your vector software and apply some effects on all shapes of the mouse cartoon. Once again, a few elements might be hard to read, but it's not a big deal since we will add more shadows as we are progressing with this drawing lesson.
In this step, you will create many small circles to create shadows and reflections on the eyes and the nose. On the nose, create two small grey circles and add transparency on the bottom of each shape. For the eyes, create large circles that will be placed below each eye. Then, create two more circles on each eye to represent reflection on the eyes and the pupils.
It's now time to add a few basic shadows to enhance our little cartoon friend. On the head, the shadow on top must be filled with a bright color and the shape must be transparent on the bottom while the shadow on the bottom must be filled with a dark color and the shape must be transparent on top. The shadow on the side of the body must be dark and transparent on the right side. For the legs, the shadow should be white and transparent on the bottom.
In this fifth and final step, create small shadows in places that are slightly hidden by other shapes of the mouse cartoon. The bottom of the ears are hidden by the head, so you can create a small shadow on each ear. The same process will occur on the neck, the tail, the front legs and the back legs. Once again, you can use transparency to enhance these new shadows. Good job!
