Learn how to draw a cute mime cartoon dressed in black and white! This particular cartoon character is very enigmatic and... silent! Indeed, mimes are similar to clowns in their desires to make you laugh. You just need to play along and embrace their weird universe to enjoy the presence of such character.
This tutorial should be quite easy to achieve if you already know how to use a vector application. Since the character is mostly made from black and white elements, shadows are easier to create and reflections are rare and mostly made of subtle white shapes.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.
On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
First, draw the outline of your mime. You can use basic shapes like circles, rectangles or triangles to do so. Of course, you can also draw using the pencil tool if you prefer. Once you are finished, use the fill tool to add plain colors. You should end up using various tones of grey except for the lips of your cartoon character.
Great! Now it's time to create simple shadows using the gradient tool. Select each shape individually and apply a light tone of color on top and a darker one on the bottom. You don't need to add any effects on the black shapes for now.
For the next two steps, we need to create new shapes to form additional shadows. It's also a good idea to use transparency to hide the top part of the new shapes. On the eyes and pupils, add small circles that will represent reflections.
On the feet, you need to duplicate the shapes and color them in white. Once again, use transparency to hide a good portion of the bottom area.
In this last step, all you need to do is create a large shadow on the left side of the head and shirt. Just apply a darker version of the color available below each shape and make the top slightly transparent. Good! I think we are done with our mime cartoon. Simple, yet very effective! :)
