This fun lizard cartoon is perfect if you want to learn how to draw a simple cartoon animal easily using a vector software! Indeed, the character is not covered with many shadows nor reflections making it easy to color and apply simple effects to.
Don't hesitate to play with colors, shapes, shadows and transparency to create something unique and original. This tutorial is only a guideline and it is important that you find your own style and create your own cartoon characters. Enjoy! :)
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline. On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
Start this drawing lesson by sketching the lines of the lizard. Once you are finished, apply some colors on each part of the animal. The result might look goofy for now, but it doesn't really matters since we will work with the gradient tool in the following steps.
Select the body and tail of the lizard cartoon and use the gradient tool to apply a nice effect like shown above. Don't forget that the bottom must be darker to create a nice result.
Use the gradient tool again and fill in the hands, the legs and the eyes. For the eyes, use a circular fill. Make sure that the middle of the eyes are white. For the hands and the legs, the bottom of each shape should be lighter.
Create circles to illustrate reflections on the eyes. Place one white circle on the pupil of each eye. Two other green circles must be placed behind each eye. Finally, place two white circles on each eye and add transparency on the bottom of all new shapes.
Add a few shadows on the left eye, below the mouth and on the right leg.
Finally, create a shape on the head, the tail and below the arm. All these new shapes must be dark and slightly transparent. These new shadows will give more depth to your cartoon character. Good job! Now you can experiment and create a new lizard cartoon using your own style!
