Learn how to draw a kitten made from cute shapes and complex digital effects. In this lesson, you will have the opportunity to sketch a fun black kitten created from an adorable template. I will show you how to add some great digital effects to end up with an illustration loaded with depth, volume and cuteness.
Ready? Let's draw now! First, you can start by sketching the cat using simple shapes and outlines. Since our goal is to create a cute character, don't hesitate to draw large eyes, a huge head, a small body and tiny legs and paws. You can also create large ears and a small nose made from an oval shape.
Continue working on this illustration by adding plain colors on the cartoon kitten. Since this is a black cat, you can add dark grey colors on most shapes. The nose can be colored in pink while the eyes are green and the pupils are black.
Select the gradient fill tool and start creating some depth by adding a second color on most shapes. For example, the bottom of the head can be filled with a dark grey color while the top is loaded with a brighter version of this same grey color.
To create even more volume you can draw additional shapes that are used to create a few shadows. These shapes can be drawn on the bottom of the ears, around the eyes, below the nose, on the body, near the legs and on the tail. All these new shapes must be partially transparent to create a subtle effect.
Nice work! This is the result once all shapes are added. This cartoon kitten looks great, but we can draw new elements to enhance this illustration even more.
In this step, you can draw white shapes that are almost invisible on the bottom (and barely visible on top) to create highlights. These new elements are crucial to really add more depth and volume to this cartoon kitten. You can see how to draw these new shapes in the illustration below.
Nice work. This cute black kitten is now completed. I hope you had fun working on this cartoon animal and feel free to use all the tips available on this page to work on your own cartoon characters. :)
