Fish cartoon (Advance vector tutorial)

In this simple step-by-step drawing lesson, I will show you how to draw a funny fish cartoon filled with great shadows and nice colors. You can always modify the shape or the colors of your character if you prefer. The fun thing with fish is that they usually come in various shapes and colors. You can use your creativity to do whatever you want to!
Also remember that owning a vector software might be a good idea if you want to complete this tutorial. It can be done with a piece of paper and a few pencils (or even with paint), but it will be longer and more difficult to achieve something similar.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline. On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
First, draw the shapes of your cartoon animal using a black outline. Once you are finished, move on to the next step which consist of adding plain colors to the illustration. It doesn't really matters if the colors are not perfect for now. We will modify them later.
Select the body, the back fin and the fins of the fish cartoon. Use your gradient tool to add some dark tones on the bottom of each shape. Be careful to select only the larger part of the fins.
In this step, we will add a few gradient effects to the eyes and the mouth. For the eyes, use a circular fill and make sure that the middle of the eyes are white. For the lips, the bottom of each of them should be darker while the top will be lighter.
Create four small circles that will be placed on the eyes and the pupils. These small circles must be white and the bottom should be transparent. These shapes are used to create reflections. You can also use the gradient tool to enhance the inside of both fins.
Draw some lines inside each fin. Most vector software are giving you the possibility to create a line that is thick on the bottom and thin on top. These lines can be colored with a dark tone of green.
In this step, you can create large circles that will be placed below the eyes of your cartoon fish. I also create a small shadow below the top fin.
Complete your work on your fish cartoon by creating shadows below the head and on the back fin. These new shapes must be bright. You can also use your transparency tool to hide the bottom part of these new shapes. That's it! Your illustration is now finished! Don't hesitate to try new shapes and play with colors! Enjoy!
