Example of an outline
In this small tutorial, I will show you an example of an outline using different medium and techniques.
This will help you figure out what could be the most appropriated technique you could use to create your drawings.
For this tutorial, we will study three different techniques: Hand drawing with a standard pen, sketching with a tablet and drawing using a vector software.
Looking at the image above, you can see that the first image was made using a basic pencil. The lines are not regular and sometimes, two or three lines are required to draw a part of the outline.
The advantages of this technique? Very easy to draw and fast results. The drawing look more spontaneous. However, it also have an unfinished look.
The second drawing was made with a graphic tablet. The lines are more clean, but still a little shaky. It does look more professional but probably not as much as the third one, made with a vector software.
This one is clean and almost perfect. It doesn't look amateur but it's not as warm as the second one.
You can also go beyond this simple exercise and try to mix different types of outline to create an even more original character. Just use your imagination!
You can draw a character using a simple pencil and then create another outline with your graphic tablet over the original one.
But to make it more unique, don't erase the first one! You can easily achieve some cool effects by mixing these techniques together!
