Crocodile cartoon (Advance vector tutorial)

Enjoy a tough crocodile cartoon drawing lesson featuring a complex cartoon animal that needs some nice shadows and colors on it! Indeed, this tutorial is more difficult to achieved than the ones that were created so far in this category. The character is made from complex shapes and it's not obvious to get the whole thing on your first attempt.
However, it doesn't matter. If you stick to it and don't mind working on the drawing lesson over and over again until you can get it right, then you should be fine.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline. On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
OK! Let's start this drawing lesson like all the other ones from this section! First, create the outline of your character. Of course, it is highly recommended that you use the template above to do so. Then, add some colors on each part of the cartoon animal.
For the second step, use the gradient tool and apply some shadows on your crocodile cartoon. Study carefully each part of the animal to be sure that your illustration is similar to the one above.
This third step is more complex. For the eyes, create circles on the pupils and the eyes. These circles must be white and transparent on the bottom. Then, create dark shadows for the nose, the top of the jaw, the bottom of the jaw, the neck, the bottom of the leg and the tail. Notice that the shape create for the top of the jaw is hiding the bottom part of the left eye. You can also create a shape under the right eye. This shape is also covering the top part of the jaw.
Great! In this step, we are still adding some dark shapes on our character. Create two dark shapes for the upper eyelids. Each shape must be transparent on the bottom. Create another shape below the jaw to make it even darker. Finally, add some dark shadows on each part of the stomach. The top of these new shapes should be hidden.
Cool! Our crocodile cartoon is great so far! Duplicate the shapes you've created on the stomach and apply a light color on each of them. Make the bottom part of each shape transparent. Behind the eyes, you can add a small shadows like depicted on the illustration above. Otherwise, if you don't do so, the eyes will be hard to read on that green head.
It's now time to add some light shadows on the cartoon character. Create a shape on the nose, the back of the head, the legs, the arm and the tail. Each shape must be colored with a very light tone of green and the bottom must be transparent.
Finally, add a few dark shapes to illustrate strong dark shadows. Don't use too much transparency on these new shapes. The goal is to give a lot of depth to a 2D character that usually looks flat. Nice! I think we did a pretty cool crocodile cartoon and it's now time to create your own character all by yourself! :)
