See what is the perfect recipe to create a chef cartoon with great colors, subtle shadows, nice reflections and a perfect look! This funny cartoon character is indeed fun to create and draw once you are familiar with vector applications.

If you don't know how to use your vector software, I will show you how to create a great 2D character that can look like a 3D illustration. This tutorial is not intended for beginners. You need to have a few notions about drawing before moving on with this exercise.

Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.

On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.

Step 1

OK! It's time to move forward. First, sketch the outlines of your cartoon character. Just make a simple illustration by using circles, rectangles and a few basic lines. No need to create a complex image. Once you are finished, you can add a few colors. I know my chef looks dark, but we will fix that in the next step.

Step 2

Select the gradient tool (you know, the one you should use to create simple filling effects) and add some basic shadows to all shapes one-by-one. The character already looks more convincing, but we are still far from the final result.

Step 3

Create two shapes that will be used to add another shadow on the hat and the legs. Once you are done, create circles to represent reflections on the eyes and the pupils. You can also add two dark circles behind the eyes to make these ones easier to read.

Step 4

Nice! For this final step, you need to create new shapes on the top of the hat, on the head, on the shirt and on the feet. These shapes must be dark and you can add a little bit of transparency on top for a better effect.

For the shapes on the feet, color them in white and use the transparency tool to hide the top a little bit. Good job! Our chef cartoon is ready to cook and in your case, you are probably ready for another drawing lesson! :)
