In this advance step-by-step tutorial, you will learn how to draw a nice cat cartoon. This cute animal is represented in this colorful illustration by a funny cartoon animal that is created with simple shapes like circles and rectangles. I will show you how to enhance this basic frame with nice shadows and colors.
All tutorials in this section are made with a vector software. Therefore, it is more convenient to complete this drawing lesson if you are the owner of a vector software. Otherwise, you can still apply some effects using pencils, but it will be harder and longer to achieve the same effect.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline. On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
In this first step, create the outline of your cat. Once this is done, add some basic colors to give life to your illustration.
Next, use your gradient tool to add some nice effects to the ears, the body and the front legs. Notice that the back legs are already part of the body. For each shape, choose a darker color on the bottom and a lighter one for the top part.
For this third step, use the circular gradient fill on the eyes and use a grey tone on the outside of the shape. The center should be white. The inside of the ears should be colored with a lighter tone of brown. Use the same colors for the nose. Finally, color each line with a dark tone, but use the transparency tool to make the top part of each line less visible.
In the fourth step, add four circles on the eyes of your cat cartoon. Each circle must be white and use the transparency tool to make the bottom part less visible.
It's now time to work on the serious stuff! Add some circles around the eyes and colored them with a dark tone of brown. Use the transparency tool to hide the top a little. Repeat the same process for the nose, but use a triangle instead. Create a dark shape on each back legs and add a shadow behind each front legs.
As you can use on the two images above, you must now add shapes that are colored with a light tone of brown on the back and front legs. Use the transparency tool to hide the bottom a little bit.
To create nice dark reflections on the head and the body, create shapes like the one in red above and color them with a dark tone of brown. Once again, use the transparency tool to hide the right part of each shape.
Finally, repeat the same process, but this time, color the shapes with a lighter tone of brown and hide the left side of each shape. Nice! Your cat cartoon is now finished! Simple isn't it?
