Learn how to draw a cool cartoon reaper filled with simple shadows and great effects! This cool cartoon character is not the most interesting symbol to be associated with. Death is a part of life and this dark character is everything but joyful!
However, the reaper is still one of my favorite characters to draw and create. Unlike monsters (that can take any shape you want), you must follow a few basic guidelines to create a nice reaper. Let's try to illustrate a nice character using only our imagination and a good vector software.
The first step would be to create the character using dark outlines. As you can see, the hand on the right is not well defined for now, but it doesn't really matter. New shapes and shadows will be added later on to make this area easier to read.
Next, add plain colors to the reaper using mostly grey tones. Once you are finished, use the gradient tool to add basic shadows to the illustration as seen on the image above. The character looks nice, but it's not good enough.
Create new dark shapes on the head, the hands, the arm and the blade. These new dark shapes are nice, but we need to hide them a little bit using the transparency tool. Our goal is to create subtle shadows that will enhance each element of the illustration.
Next, repeat the same process, but this time draw the shapes on the clothes of the reaper. As you can see, my goal is not to create a realistic character, but rather a simple icon with attitude.
Finally, add light shapes on the blade and the clothes of the cartoon reaper. Once again, use the transparency tool to hide these new shapes to form a subtle, but effective reflection on the cartoon character. Nice job! I hope you had fun creating this fun character and don't be afraid to create your own reaper using your own style and colors! :)
