Create a cute cartoon frog using these simple tips and advice. In this step-by-step tutorial, I will show you how to create a frog made from simple lines and effects using a vector application. This lesson can also be done using pencils or markers, but it is optimize for vector drawing.
Of course, you need to have some knowledge on how to use such a software and you must be able to draw this simple frog without using basic shapes. Are you up for the challenge? Great! Let's begin now! :)
First, you can draw the animal using simple basic lines. As you can see below, these outlines are already filled with colors and are made from pointed ends. Since we are working with a vector application, you can easily adjust these colors later in the tutorial.
Next, you can add solid shapes filled with plain colors behind the outlines. As you can see below, the frog is mostly filled with bright green colors except for the eyes (which are red) and the stomach (which is beige/yellow). This is it for this step! :)
In most recent applications, you can have access to a gradient fill tool which gives you the opportunity to add a second color to the shapes already drawn. This way, you can create simple shadows on most shapes only using colors. For instance, the bottom of the pupils are filled with a dark red color while the top is brighter.
In this step, we can now add new shapes to create simple shadows all over the frog. These new elements must be green and slightly transparent. You can add new shapes around the eyes, on the back legs, the stomach and behind the front legs.
Adding shadows can give a lot of depth to the illustration. Drawing white shapes to create highlights is also a good tip to give more volume to this cartoon animal. Once again, you must play with the opacity of these new shapes to create something visually appealing.
This is the final illustration once all shapes are added and all steps are completed. As you can see below, this cartoon animal is not made from complex shapes and effects. Indeed, all tips are easy to implement and can be used on virtually any cartoon illustrations you have in mind. Enjoy! :)
