This drawing lesson will help you add to this artist cartoon illustration a few gradient effects that will make the whole thing look more profesional and enjoyable to look at! Indeed, you only need to add a few shadows and reflections on your picture to create something amazing and rewarding!
Using only a few basic shapes, the gradient tool and a little bit of transparency can be enough to create a result that will be refreshing and cool! Don't hesitate to purchase a vector software if you don't already own one. You can do miracles with these fun applications! :)
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline. On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
The first step is quite simple! All you need to do is reproduce the character above using a black outline or simply draw one of your own character with a vector software. Then, add a few basic colors to your drawing. You can use plain colors for now.
Once you are finished, select the gradient tool and apply a basic effect on all shapes of the character. Of course, you will need to do this on one shape at a time. Notice that all effects are usually darker on the bottom and lighter on top.
Now the fun part! :) Create circles on the character's head to illustrate reflections on the eyes and the pupils. These circles must be white and slightly transparent on the bottom. You can also create dark patches below each eye. Finally, you can place a circle above the nose to make this one softer. A little shadow below the neck can also be created as well as white reflections on the feet.
In this last step, place a few shadows on the left side of the hat, the head, the shirt and the pants. These shadows must be darker and slightly transparent too. Nice work! Your artist cartoon illustration is now ready to be displayed on the web for others to see! :)
